Anno Dracula

Anno Dracula, by Kim Newman, was an interesting read, to say the least. This book is written from three prospectives in the wake of Dracula surviving and becoming the Prince Consort to the Queen.

An interesting theory to explore, this is written in a manner that echoes the serialized novels from the 1800’s. If you are not a fan of Sherlock Holmes (the stories, not the movies or TV series) or the use of Victorian era colloquial terms, you might not enjoy this book. Anno Dracula makes reference to almost every character and some historical figures that, for me, really made the story interesting.

As a Dracula fan, I had mixed feelings. On one hand, it did a very good job of working out a complex world changed by an evil vampire and showing that not all vampires are terrible and that not all humans hate them. On the other hand, it made the vampires very relate-able. An interesting read, and I will be going on a hunt for the other books in this series, but I would not say this is a good reading for someone who isn’t interested in literature and well read.

Overall, I would recommend this book to those who already love to read and enjoy Dracula, Sherlock Holmes, and more Gothic novels.
