This shall have no tags. I just wanted to start with that.
I am currently at a loss as to what I should be doing with my life. I have a degree in Chemical Engineering, am a recent grad, and can’t get a job. Honestly, I kind of don’t want to. In many ways I don’t feel ready for the world, a feeling that needs to go away. I don’t feel prepared to be a chemical engineer, despite having worked in real world situations and projects.
And I would rather try to pursue writing. I have a novel that, after six drafts, I think is ready for the next step. The fact that everyone I have had read it agrees gives me a very false sense of ability. The other fact that I think my degree can perhaps help me really doesn’t make me a better writer. At least, I don’t think so.
Still, I have only submitted to a single agent. I think I am ready to pursue this. Also to pursue editing. I have read over 1600 books. I posses an understanding of what reads well and what readers want to read. I understand style and maintaining that style, whether it is modern, poetic, flourished, or imitating a period style.
But first, I need to build a portfolio!
Frankly, I would love to hear opinions (that are constructive) on what you think I should do?
