Edward Lazellari, author of Awakenings and the third novel in The Guardians of Aandor Series Blood of Ten Kings, has kindly taken some time to put together whom he would love to see play his characters were they to be put on the screen. Below are his musings on the subject!
Novelists are control freaks. Film, TV, stage, and comic books require the writer to compromise and hand the story to others to execute. A book is a direct connection from the writer to the reader; there are no directors, actors, or production artists to interpret the piece. That said, there isn’t a novelist alive that isn’t smitten with the idea of his works being adapted to other mediums after the fact.
If I lived in a world where wishes come true, mine would be the following: a Netflix series with a thirteen-episode first season comprised of the first two books, Awakenings and The Lost Prince, and a ten-episode second season that covers Blood of Ten Kings. My choice of directors would be James Gunn, Susanne Bier, James Wan, Alan Taylor, Tim Van Patton, Daniel Minahan, and Peyton Reed.
I think the first two books would come off great with a production feel of SYFY’s Magicians and the last book should emulate NetFlix’s The Last Kingdom.
My dream cast, in order of appearance, would be:
Awakenings
Stephen Dillane as Colby Dretch
Alexander Skarsgard as Lord Dorn
Hale Appleman as Seth Raincrest
Elena Satine as Lelani Stormbringer
Joel Kinnaman as Callum MacDonnell
Chloe Bennett as Catherine MacDonnell
Levi Miller as Daniel Hauer
Ruben Blades as Ben Reyes
(The Lost Prince and BoTKs)
Toby Stephens as Malcolm Robbe
Jeffrey Wright as Reverend Allyn Grey
Edward Hibbert as Balzac Cruz
Margot Robbie as Chryslantha Godwynn
Alice Eve as Lara
Or we can go with complete unknowns, which is fine with me as long as they can act.
Southern here! I really do like these actors, and have enjoyed their work. I think it would be very interesting to see how they all work together, and I enjoy that both actors for Dorn and Cal are Swedish.
Be sure to pick up The Guardians of Aandor! Great for those who love action, adventure, urban fantasy with dark (think bloody and twisted) themes.
