The Trouble With Magic: A Book Review

Written by Madelyn Alt, this is a cozy mystery I found in my library as I was hunting for a book. And I’d been looking for something light and quick to read. But this wasn’t what I wanted.

The mystery in this novel is okay at best. Maggie, a girl who happens upon a cute store and lucks into a job offer from the owner Liss, turns out to hear dead people. Sometimes. And, as she was late to work and got fired, takes the job offer to work for Liss, the town witch. The mystery? Who killed Maggie’s new boss’s sister, because everyone thinks it was Liss.

The biggest problem I had with the novel is how the author treated Tom and Maggie. It just… it was beyond awkward, it was ridiculous. After finishing this novel I went hunting for reviews for future books to see if they got together. Spoiler: they don’t.

And that just bothers me SO MUCH. Don’t feed me a meet-cute, and then don’t deliver!

Honestly, I don’t currently recommend this to anyone. The author never finished the series.
