Written by Angela Chrysler, this novel follows Kallan, an elf and powerful ruler-to-be, as she grows into her powers and then must rely on her enemy to help her hide from those who destroy her. The first half of a series that is continues in Fire and Lies.
This novel is so well written and just flows through the story line. This is a high fantasy, focus on the Norse mythology folks, and really does a great job of creating well-rounded, compelling characters.
It is a well written novel that I found a pleasure to read. Now, this book was originally published in 2015, I believe, and it is one that went completely under my radar. When it comes to high fantasy, I usually don’t hunt for it. But this is a series that isn’t written in extra-unnecessary fancy language that makes it difficult to get through 10 pages in a sitting. This is a great novel for those who want something with a lot of fantasy and action, but don’t want to deal with that kind of writing. The writing style reminds me more of urban fantasy style than high fantasy.
Highly recommend it for anyone looking for a new book with action, magic, power, royalty, and two characters in which one hates the other and the other appreciates the main character. (That probably didn’t make any sense, but if you read it it will!)

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Angela B. Chrysler is a writer, logician, philosopher, and die-hard nerd who studies theology, historical linguistics, music composition, and medieval European history in New York with a dry sense of humor and an unusual sense of sarcasm. She lives in a garden with her family and cats.
In 2014, Ms. Chrysler founded Brain to Books and the virtual trade show, Brain to Books Cyber Convention. A passionate gardener and incurable cat lover, Ms. Chrysler spends her days drinking coffee and writing beside a volume of Edgar Allan Poe who strongly influences her style to this day. When Ms. Chrysler is not writing, she enables her addictions to all things nerdy, and reads everything she can get her hands on no matter the genre. Occasionally, she finds time to mother her three children and debate with her life-long friend who she eventually married. Her writing is often compared to Tad Williams. Her influences are Edgar Allan Poe, The Phantom of the Opera, and Frankenstein.
Angela also loves writing, cats, reading, knitting, gardening, Tai Chi, Yoga, meditation, coffee, BBC, baking, cooking, dancing, singing, anime, and smiling.
