Written by Sarah Gailey, Magic for Liars follows Ivy, a PI who’s twin sister Tabitha is a mage. Yup, we have the normy human main character and the magical sibling. Only they are adults. And terribly estranged. And one decides its a great idea to pretend like she has powers. And there has been a murder, which is the only reason why the two have met again.
Shall we begin with the writing? The writing style was smooth, first person, and interesting. The main character is a jaded lady who doesn’t trust anyone but herself. And it ends up working out really well with how the plot lines plays out. About the only thing I wasn’t a huge fan of (which I normally complain about) was the lack of detail. I really wanted to know more about a few characters that… maybe I just missed their descriptions somehow.
The characters had depth, were twisted, and just memorable. I think the title was very appropriate from a character stand point, though I won’t say anymore on that.
Overall, this was a really enjoyable, dark novel about magic and murder and the variety of people that exist.
The ending and the how and why were just so… twisted. And the role that family ended up playing in the story overall.
One last thing before who would like this and who wouldn’t, I appreciated the juxtoposition of what Tabitha was really like versus what Ivy thought of her.
Alright, if you are an adult who enjoyed (enjoys) Harry Potter, this is a book for you. If you like magic in general, this is for you. If you like magic with murder, this is definitely a novel for you.
There is some romance, but this isn’t a romance. There are some terrible, terrible things that go on, but that adds to the story.
Overall, I recommend this novel.
