The Rook: A Book Review

Written by Daniel O’Malley, The Rook follows Myfanwy Thomas as she awakes as a different person than who she was moments ago with absolutely no memory. Faced with the choice of going into the mystery of the life this body had before she inhabited it or running away to a foreign country, Myfanwy (think Tiffany with an M) ends up diving into a supernatural world that protects Britain.

Let’s start with: did I enjoy this book? Yeah. But I wish it had kept the pacing from the first half of the book more consistently, and I really wish we got a much better feel of the characters than we did. This is an action book, that really lets the plot movement give you the characters, instead of really getting to know them. We had a lovely moment with a Vampire, but we never really got to see the best (in my opinion) monster in the series for very long.

This book also suffers from having one of the two “surprises” happen half way through the book before you really know what is going on. And, honestly, none of the surprises were really all that surprising.

If you enjoy action novels (you know, the novel equivalent of an action movie), and don’t want any romance, this would be a great choice. It has some very dry humor, and is very tongue in cheek, and if that is your jam, this could be fantastic.

If none of that sounds appealing, I’d recommend to give this one a pass.
