Neverwhere: A Book Review

Written by Neil Gaiman, Neverwhere is set in the fictional London Below, and follows Richard Mayhew. Now, Richard wasn’t trying to be forgotten by London Above and forced to follow Door throw London Below as she tries to find out why her entire family was killed. But that is what he has to do.

I enjoyed this novel, and actually finished it, as opposed to American Gods, written by Neil Gaiman. I enjoyed it because of the characters, each unique with their own issues and strengths. The plot, and I mean the plot and not the setting, also kept this book moving for me.

What I found to be difficult to get through was the setting. This was different even from fay settings that I have read over the years, and the variety of characters – and range within that variety – was a lot to comprehend for a book that I was just reading for enjoyment.

That didn’t take away from the book much, but it is something to be aware of if you are a slow reader or things like that – the setting and style of characters – slow you down or aren’t enjoyable for you.

Who would like this book? Fantasy lovers, urban fantasy folks, adventure lovers, those who appreciate a well written story. This novel DOES NOT have any real romance. There are hints, and there is some kissing involved in there somewhere, but that is it. Loss of love is more present than romance.
