The Almost Sisters: A Book Review

Written by Joshilyn Jackson, The Almost Sisters follows Leia as she finds out not only is she pregnant with a baby at 38 and doesn’t even know the father’s first name, but her wonderful grandmother is sick – losing her memory and mind sick – and she and her best friend have been hiding this the last few years.

This book was one of the best reads for me so far this year.

Generally, I’m not a fan of a novel that is trying to hit all the key phrases to get published right now, something that deals with racism, diversity, touches on sexuality, nerdy topics (like, real life nerdy topics), and feminism. Usually it reads a little forced or a little false.

This book doesn’t. Every character was real (though, let me be clear, I despised Leia’s step-sister so very, very much), and the story itself was compelling.

An excellent book for book club (which is why I read this one) and just a great read overall.
