Roomies: A Book Review

Written by Christina Lauren (really, I should say written by Christina and Lauren as this is a duo writing team that has written a number of books together) Roomies follows Holland as she faces a difficult opportunity to help her dear uncle Robert keep his off-Broadway play going and help an insanely talented (and handsome) stranger, Irishman Calvin, stay in the states to make that possible.

Before getting into the review THIS IS NOT A NOVEL FOR CHILDREN. THIS CONTAINS MATURE CONTENT. There, that is done.

This is a lovely novel that just caught my heart and I read in a night. This novel is very millennial with an old school twist. Who would agree to marry someone they don’t know? Who? It just isn’t something you see now a days.

And the characters had so much depth, and they went through actual struggles. There was miscommunication. Yes, there was also a happy ending, but up until it happened, it looked like maybe there wasn’t going to be a happy ending.

The writing was sound and smooth, propelling the reader forward. Each character had depth and a true personality. Now, Holland is spoiled. And she knows that. So, if you don’t like reading about kids who get a LOT of help from their families, I would suggest you don’t read this.

Another nice/great thing is that the authors didn’t try, much, to write Calvin’s accent in. It was an indirect thing, such as Holland always making a mental comment about how he says the word think.

A contemporary romance, this is a really good read. But, it is completely and utterly a romance. So you know.

ALRIGHT, THERE BE SPOILERS BELOW

I did not like Lulu from the get go. And it had more to do with the hostility and jealousy I could tell she would have before she actually displayed it. Just, did not like her.

Calvin’s reaction to finding out that Holland was kind of stalking him is reasonable, but I appreciated how he accepted it and was looking for her after she left. That is what really showed how much he cares for her. And, in her defense, she didn’t know his name. She didn’t follow him home. But, she knew when he would play, and I would say it was his music that compelled her to keep coming back. She works with a lot of attractive people, and she didn’t even know his eye color. No, it was about his music, which was a fantastic element throughout the book.

I adore Calvin. I would rather like one of my own. Though, perhaps not one who walks around naked all the time. Irish, musician, and he took the relationship seriously from the get go. He treated it as a real marriage. Yes, he should have told Holland about the fake wife earlier, but that isn’t something that just comes up in conversation.

Again, overall, just a great book. Really loved it. I’ll be recommending it to a number of people. With some discretion, as it is very adult.
