Ghost Shadow: A Book Review

Written by Heather Graham (click here to see a review of another of her novels), Ghost Shadow follows Daniel Beckett, a man once suspected of a terrible murder, and Katie O’Hara, a woman who sees ghosts. Okay, there is a bit more to it than that. Daniel’s one-time-fiance was found, 10 years ago, in his family’s oddities museum in a display, and was never solved. Katie, presently, wants to by the museum and re-open it but is stopped when Daniel comes back to town.

And then more murders most foul.

This is a book I kept reading because of the plot and the characters were rather interesting. The writing wasn’t. The author chose to describe only some things, and there was more dialogue than writing. You don’t need to say the same thing three times, and also, without some kind of context, the random tangents people would burst out with made no sense. At all. Didn’t help the plot line or really develop the characters at all. It felt like a draft that hadn’t been fleshed-out at times.

But the plot was interesting. And the characters were interesting, even if a fifth of what they said didn’t make sense. And this is, supposedly, a trilogy. I was going to just plow through the next two books, until I learned there are actually three more and they don’t follow the same main characters anymore. Honestly? I highly recommend, instead of reading this novel, if you want a novel about a woman who sees ghosts, go check out Amanda Stevens.

The big plus, great selling character in this series was honestly Bartholomew the ghost. He was interesting, but we didn’t get to know him a lot or see him really interact a whole lot. In general, it just felt like the book needed more. A lot more.

Just like with the other novel by her that I read, if you need a fix this will scratch it, but there are a lot better novels out there.
