Avenger’s Endgame: A Good Movie on its Own

**SPOILERS**

You have been warned.

Alright, I’m going to start with the good.

As a movie, outside of the pre-set up universe, this was a well done movie. A bit quiet for what it is (soft music, slow moving), but the action scenes were good and they built up tension well. The premise was interesting, and the time travel was… well, for time travel it was okay, though they broke their own rules at times.

The acting was good. The cinematography was good. It was a good movie to watch, honestly, if you haven’t seen the other movies, because they explained pretty much everything.

ON TO THE ISSUES

Mahahahaha.

First and foremost, let’s talk about Thor. Fat Thor, as the internet has been calling him. Why did they do it? To show that Thor is depressed and despondent. Also, to have someone to easily make fun of. But, here is the thing, Thor has always been a point of humor because he is Thor. He is the strong blond who doesn’t get all of the references.

Why doesn’t Fat Thor, and Thor in general, really work with the Thor that has been created throughout all of the other movies, but in particular Ragnarok and Infinity wars? One, he is a god who is thousands of years old, and honestly did we ever see any fat Asgardians? No. We saw bigger guys, yes, but they had ALWAYS been like that, because that is who they are. Give me 50 years, a 100, but not five. Yes, he lost most of his people and his brother after finally starting a real relationship where he could trust Loki. Yet, when it comes to Loki, it would appear that his death didn’t effect him as much. HE WALKED RIGHT BY HIM WHILE LOKI WAS IN PRISON AND WE DIDN’T EVEN GET A FUNNY MOMENT. Wasted opportunity with Fat Thor, who better to mock him and know something odd is going on than Loki, the god of mischief? And when it comes to the death of his people, we saw that, in the end of Ragnarok, Thor finally came into his own, finally became a real leader in the face of already losing so many of his people. By that logic, as things got worse and worse, Thor would turn to leading his people as a reason to keep going. He would become more serious. He would actually be with the people that are left and be their king, which is what they needed. The Thor previously established in the series wouldn’t hide away by himself, he has grown! I give you Ragnarok as proof! Back to the weight gain, if Valkyrie didn’t gain wait after being a drunk for thousands of years and doing the minimal work to catch people, I don’t think Thor would in a matter of a few years.

To sum up: Thor should be leading his people and wouldn’t have gained weight. If anything, his PTSD/depression should have been more of the quiet kind with terrible temper. The writers had this happen because they wanted it to happen, not because it made sense for it to happen to Thor.

Next, Valkyrie. *ehem* SHE WAS A DRUNK FOR THOUSANDS OF YEARS AND LEFT HER PEOPLE BEHIND. We know that the gods are slow to change, so it honestly doesn’t make sense for everyone to follow her, for her to step in and be in charge. Even when all of the Valkyrie were around, she wasn’t in charge. She was the one who lived. She is the example of, if Thor was going to leave his people, how he would have done it. Not get fat. Valkyrie likely knows few if any of the people left, and they don’t know her. The Valkyrie aren’t known for leading others. They are warriors. They come for the dead. Having her lead just…. it doesn’t make sense. It is lazy writing to the extreme. We don’t want Thor to lead, so lets make it Valkyrie! AND WHERE DID THE HORSE COME FROM? (Scroll to the bottom for my totally wrong theory on that one.)

Captain America. The opening makes sense. The ending he got doesn’t, for a number of reasons. This we will count.

  1. Old Captain could not have been in the same universe based on The Ancient One’s rules that were already defined. Him being there proves that they did change the time line. And his age doesn’t make sense because he has super human healing abilities – see him in his 40s or 50s, sure, but not that old. I would put that man at least in his 80s if not significantly older.
  2. Captain always fights. Always. In the second Captain movie, he had someone else who could have been his love interest. He wouldn’t walk away from all of the work that still needs to be done after Endgame. It just doesn’t make sense with the character we have been given. He is the only option left to unite everyone.

Hulk. Lazy writing. Instead of dealing with the GIANT issue of him not being able to hulk out in the last movie, we will just let him “sit in gamma radiation for 18 months.” Lazy. And his character… added a little? Not a whole much.

5 years later is too long. Immediately after, the whole world will be in chaos, which is something that only Captain Marvel addresses when she leaves to go work with the other worlds. But, five years is long enough to move on. You know, there are numerous books, and possibly movies, that discuss WHY THIS IS A BAD IDEA. They are dead. Gone. And in five years, while not everyone will have moved on, a lot of people will. Look at the black plague. 30-60% of the population died in Europe. And they continued on in life. Five years and you have adjusted. There will be people who will come back and all of their things are gone. No home, no job, and you may end up with even more issues. Five years is just too long.

An example:

The Winter People by Jennifer McMahon

Loki. We get Gamora back, but no Loki? Loki is the trickster! He has faked his death so many times! And he has the ability to travel now! I’m sorry, but there were just too many missed opportunities for Loki that they could have taken and made it that much better. Yes, we are getting a TV show that will star Tom Hiddleston, but still.

Missed opportunities. A few Loki ones, though we got one that they did take. Thor and Captain Marvel! Those two could have had a lot of humorous/interesting moments! A comic call back when they were gathering everyone (think panels, folks, panels).

Again, there were good things. It was an enjoyable movie, by itself. Just… they could have done so much better. So much.

This might get updated in the future and more pondering occurs.
