From Blood and Ash: A Book Review

Written by Jennifer L. Armentrout, author of the Lux series, this novel follows Poppy, daughter of the gods and The Maiden, as she works to find her real place in the world – learning to fight, sneaking out, and finding relationships she shouldn’t have – and her new guard Hawke as creatures are coming through the mist.

First and foremost, this does have some adult themes in it, so be aware of that.

Second, this is written so much better than the Lux series, and I really liked the characters, to the point that when the first character dies in this book I was very upset and right there with Poppy over how unfair it was.

The pacing in this story was wonderful as well, and while the romance was fast and immediate, it also makes sense with the society that Armentrout has created in this world. The complaint that I have with this novel is really all in the building of the mythos/different roles that everyone has. I understand keeping the Atlantians, those who used to rule the land hundreds of years ago, vague, but The Acended just make no sense and it takes a long time to get to a point of understanding what is going on.

If you are looking for a fantasy, action, romance, I actually think this could be a good option. The writing isn’t the absolute most amazing, but the characters are interesting and the plot is gripping.
